Well,I have been training for this marathon for the past 6 months. I have done most of my training at 5:00am 4-5 days a week and averaging 40 miles a week. You can imagine my disappointment when 2 days before I woke up with a cold. Not just any cold, it was accompanied with fever, hot sweats and lack of energy. Esteban had had it for the past 2 weeks. So I began talking to people and found all kinds of answers. :) That day I took at least 15 vitamin C, apple cider vinegar with baking soda every three hours, airborne every 3 hours, a pill called get well stay well...I took 8 of them, zicam every 3 hours and I read online that broccoli is one of the top immune system building foods. I ate an entire head. Amazingly my stomach handled everything just fine. I woke up Friday feeling just as sick. I continued taking all the medicine.
Friday around 3:00 Brian, Heather and I headed down to Provo. We had a really fun day. We picked up our race packets, went to dinner, visited the girls group home, drove the entire course (which we regretted because we founded that it was much harder than we expected) and went to Heather's brother's house to sleep for the night. They made fun of all my concoctions, but that didn't stop me. We hung out for a while and went to bed around 10pm.
My alarm went off at 3:30am...ouch! The first thing I noticed was that I felt perfect! My sore throat was gone and I felt great! That was a mixture of a lot of prayers and a lot of medicine! We drove to the mall and the buses shipped us up the canyon. We decided to get rid of our gloves and rain gear and threw it in the trailer. 3 minutes later it began raining and it didn't stop for 1 1/2 hours. Heather and I stayed together until mile 11. I was feeling really good so I left her at that point. It was a brave move because she is a great pacer and has done this so many times. I worried that I would be going too fast and not be able to keep the pace and burn out. Well, I felt alright until mile 20. The last 7 was going down University Ave. stoplight after stoplight. It got old and my legs were exhausted! I pushed my hardest through it and was able to keep under a 9 minute mile through that stretch. I ended up coming in at 3:35:44!!!! I qualified for Boston!!!!! Words cannot express how happy I was! So much time training for it and I made it! Brian told me that if I beat him and qualified he would get me to Boston. I did both! Heather came in at 3:46:47.7. She needed a 3:46:48. She couldn't do that again if she tried. She qualified by 3 hundreths of a second! I am soooo excited to go with her. She has become such a great friend. Brian came in at 3:57. His goal was to come in under 4 so he also made his goal! What a great experience and accomplishment! I would recommend it to anyone! It is so much work, but worth every minute!
